A tale of good friends, cold water, and riptides
The idea for Linda Mar Ventures was conceived on the drive to our favorite surf spot. Surfing for us was not only a way to get out of school but also a time to discuss the things we wanted to do in life.
We learned about venture capital and immediately wanted to participate. The catch? We were just two dudes talking on surfboards with only a few years of college experience and random side projects under our belts.
One time, we were so deep in conversation we hadn't even noticed that we were swept out to sea in a riptide (true story).
Like most good things in life, the thought came to us: why not now?
We realized that as students, we have a unique position to know who on campus is working on the biggest and best projects before anyone else. These entrepreneurs don't need a 500k seed round check; they just need a few thousand to get the ball rolling. More than the money, they need mentors and people who want to open doors for them.
That's where we want to be - right in the middle of people wanting to give back to their campus and entrepreneurs ready to take the next step. This was our lightbulb moment.
Is this a romantic origin story? Yes, it is. But as outlandish as it may seem, it's the truth. For those wondering, the beach's name is Linda Mar Beach, and this was how Linda Mar Ventures was formed.
